As a young woman growing up in America, you never plan for a night of violence like the victim in this case experienced on November 21–22, 2023. But you make a few quiet assumptions about how others will react if something like that ever happens to you.

As a young woman, you assume:

• ❌ If you scream for help in an apartment building, neighbors will come to your aid.
• ❌ If someone calls 911, the police will be dispatched and the system will protect you.
• ❌ If you need a rape kit done, the hospital will perform the procedure in a timely fashion and the evidence will be used.
• ❌ If you want your day in court to tell your story, you’ll have it.

In this case, those assumptions were shattered.

Despite visible injuries documented by police, a completed Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE Kit) with DNA evidence, grand jury testimony, photographs of bruising and strangulation marks, surveillance footage, and witness statements, the original felony charges (Rape 1, Strangulation, Assault IV DV) were reduced through a plea agreement. After more than two years of delays, multiple defense counsel withdrawals, and repeated trial continuances, the victim never got her day in open court.

This is why the case is noteworthy to the regular citizen: it raises serious questions about whether the justice system failed a young woman when she needed it most. When strong evidence and a victim’s courage meet repeated procedural delays and a last-minute plea deal, many see a potential miscarriage of justice.
